Koi fish strange behavior Help ??!!?
So I recently purchased 17 Koi fish. They are about 2-5 inches long. I a pond about 400 gallons on the inside which is at the bottom of a waterfall. A few days after the fish they were purchased started acting very strange. They do not eat and constantly float to the surface and often gasping for air. Our pond is about a foot depth and has no plants in it just rocks. We have never used this pond and it never really has not been properly cleaned, but we have two filters. We have a waterfall and a pond filter that filters are supposed to work. If the filters of our good work, then what is wrong with the fish? I have not tested the pH level of water or whatever, but I will soon. Should I change the water and remove the fish? if so how?
If the pond is the new filter is not cycled yet, then ammonia waste will be set up in the water. http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm Siphon out half the water and replace it with clean stuff (and some water conditioner) that will lower the level of ammonia in water and help to keep the fish alive during the boot process ponds. You may need to do this several times as it takes several weeks for the pond to settle and the natural cycle to begin in the filters. Main problem, too many fish added too soon, you should have started with only a few, and built numbers a couple of months. Also, long-term pond is too small for the many Koi, they can grow huge, but it is not the problem now. Once you get the pond bike properly, they will be OK there for a while (maybe 12 months) before they become too large. Ian
