Better Betta Care: How To Take Care Of Betta Fish
Good betta care consists of basic necessities, as well as some things that can be done to make your aquarium better. Because these fish are so accustomed to changing environment, it’s no surprise that pet owners frequently just don’t know what to do. A small tank for a betta fish works just as nicely as a glass jar. Make sure your container is covered! Bettas are known for jumping out of water when the owner’s not looking.
So, you’re asking, how do I take care of betta fish? First, you must know what to feed it. Know that bettas eat quickly, so feed it whatever it can munch down in a matter of minutes. Flaky food is a no-no for good betta care. Because food residue and digestive byproducts are bound to end up in the water, wash the bowl once every few days at the least. Keep the water fresh if there’s no filtration system installed.
Second most important thing for better betta care is that bettas can be sensitive to change. If you want to switch from bottled water to tap, for example, then make sure you mix the two 30/70, 50/50, and then 70/30 before going 100% tap. This will allow your fish to adjust to its new “climate,” so to speak.
Third, don’t worry if the water appears foamy. Male bettas blow bubbles at the surface, which means they’re healthy and well. This isn’t something to be concerned about. Female bettas need time to get adjusted to living together; don’t just throw 5 or 6 of them together at once.
Fourth thing to keep in mind about betta caee is to keep them away from predator fish. Bigger fish tend to pick on their smaller neighbors – sometimes, with the possibility of bullying them to death. I’ve had fish for 2 years and have personally seen it happen (it’s as if fish have gangs of their own!) so keep your smaller fish separate.
Last, but not least: to take care of betta fish, check out the resource box for a manual by Adam Short. He’s an experienced fish owner with tons of tips and advice on how to help your betta care strategies thrive. You may be endangering your betta fish right now, and not even know it! Short discusses all of this in his book, “Betta Care Made Easy.” I can personally vouch that this product is well worth its price; you’ll never have to buy any supplemental materials on betta care again, so check out Short’s guide for more information.
